influences on modern Culture
The lesson we learn from the story of Arachne and Athena as well as the story of Niobe, is that having a huge ego, too much pride (hubris), or showing off will bring you many problems. They also teach us how guilt and remorse can lead to miseries and eventually, death. Arachne, for instance, realized that she was wrong, but felt too guilty and hangs herself. These two myths, as well as other Greek myths and stories, have helped to shape our moral standards today.
Mythology has influenced many things in our lives, including our language. We get the word arachnid from the myth of Athena and Arachne. The word Arachne and Arachnid has been a part of the romance languages (those the people still use today), as well.
Many of us also decorate homes with sculptures, vases, and paintings that depict the tale of Arachne-and so the decoration became one aspect of modern culture.
Similar to the purpose of religion, the purpose of the story of Arachne was to explain the creation of spiders. That way, people of both the past and present days could understand the nature.
How modern culture is interpreted and understood can certainly be reflected on various mythologies, including the story of Athena, Arachne, and Niobe.
